KATSRAJ SHIVA TEMPLE
(Chakwal , Punjab district, Pakistan)

Dedicated to God Shiva, . Legend has it that when God Shiva's wife, Sathi, dies He cried so much that two pools were created.
One is located in Pushkar and the other was formed here.
It houses seven temples of which the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva has been built on a square platform and the entrance has a recessed round arch.Hindu mythology, the pond at the Katas Raj temple in Chakwal has a mythical association with Lord Shiva; it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife, Sathi. The story goes that when Satti died, Lord Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds -- one at Pushkara in Ajmer in India and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means raining eyes, in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Katas is derived.
MAHABHARATA TIME:
---------------------------
Katas Raj temple has existed since the days of Mahabharata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their exile at the site. The Pandava brothers is said to have taken refuge here during their days of exile.
According to Hindu mythology once the Pandavas reached a lake and when they were about to quench their thirst, a Yaksha, the protector of the lake, appeared and said that only those who rightly answer his questions would be allowed to drink from the lake. The four Pandavas failed and were made lifeless by the Yaksha. Finally Yudhishtira was able to answer all his questions following which his brothers were revived. According to one legend, this dialogue took place at the Katas Raj Temple pond whose holy water is believed to have magical powers.
Shri Amar Kund
--------------------
The temple complex also has a sacred pool for bathing. (Shri Amar Kund, the sacred pond, was showered with rose petals and pilgrims drank its water and filled bottles to take home.Hindus believed they became ‘pavitra’ (clean) by bathing in the water of the holy pond.)According to Hindu mythology, the holy pond was formed when Lord Shiva wept over the death of his beloved wife.

The temples at the Katasraj site, located 40 km from Chakwal town, were built by Hindu kings around 900 years ago. However since 2012 this has been drying up due to excessive use of the ground water for industrial purposes The Pakistan Government is considering nominating the temple complex for World Heritage Site status. It also proposes to spend about Rs 20 million in three phases for the restoration of the complex.
